<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">As many know, the waning days of Zappa tours tend to get a little bit... silly. In September 1973, it was deranged melodies of Mothers songs, Winter 1976 brought us Roy Estrada's ridiculously melodramatic odes to rubber heads, and who could forget Summer 1980's late-June journey to Darkest Africa? For the waning days of the second 1980 tour, the overarching theme was "jukebox melodies" - having the band launch off into renditions of, say, Royal March from Aida in the middle of, for example, City of Tiny Lights, i.e., e.g., perhaps, let's say. And, as any good little Zappateer knows, the quintessential example of this would be the show played in Des Moines on November 1980, where the band went through over ten minutes of "name that tune" excess. Certainly, this ranks as the most bald-faced moment of Zappa's "Anything, Anytime . . . For No Reason At All" philosophy - and actually, to my knowledge, this is the only time Zappa ever actually said those words onstage. Unfortunately, the recording of this show is hardly without its problems - severe pitch fluctuations dominate what would otherwise be a very interesting City of Tiny Lights solo, and due to an unfortunate tapecut, the AAAFNRAA medley itself is entirely stripped of context. We can make the educated guess that it occured during a typically-ridiculous Torture Never Stops solo section, but how exactly the band journeyed from Torture to Anything is left to the imagination. As if that weren't bad enough, the sound quality is a very, VERY generous "B-", with the vocals rarely intelligible, and several moments of what seem to be secret-word play and onstage tomfoolery end up lost to the simultaneously boomy and shrill conditions.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Well, okay, let's take a deep breath, and put everything after the word "unfortunately" into the past tense. Thanks to the absolutely tireless efforts of a certain man from the Iowa area, we - the Zappateer community as a whole - are honored, not just with a master clone of the originally circulated source, but with that, plus one - make that TWO, yes that's right you heard right TWO - alternate recordings, which combine to present a complete picture of the evening of November 30th, 1980.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Of course, an unearthing this exciting deserves a backstory. The short version is that our old B- source has been upgraded to a B+/B, and two altogether brand-new sources combine to give us the complete picture of Des Moines 1980! The primary source for this seed is the middle one in terms of sound quality - perhaps an odd choice for the first seed, but the old source has its fair share of pitch problems which will take some time to resolve to our stringent satisfaction.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So what exactly do we learn from finally hearing the complete show? Plenty! For those who are familiar with the currently-circulating recording, but are unready, unwilling, and/or unable to familiarize themselves with this new compilation - or who just want a no-nonsense guided tour through all the changes as they wait for this compilation to arrive on their hard drives - here is a list of new discoveries (those who'd rather not be spoiled... close your eyes now!):
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">* - The show opens with a very decent version of Black Napkins.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">* - Frank's Panty Rap is present, and is basically the same version we're used to, complete with step-by-step instructions for those who wear bikini-style panties underneath a pair of jeans.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">* - The formerly-missing portion of You Are What You Is is nothing terribly surprising.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">* - VERY INTERESTING REVELATION #1: For only the third documented time, Torture does NOT segue from an I Ain't Got No Heart. For whatever perverse reason, Frank decides to throw us a Cosmik Debris and Keep It Greasey in between City and Torture. Considering the typical rigidity of the Fall 1980 setlist, I believe this definitely warrants the "very interesting" label - your mileage may or may not vary.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">* - VERY INTERESTING REVELATION #2: We could already assume that the AAAFNRAA medley arises out of a Torture Never Stops solo, but now we can confirm it. The "song" portion of Torture is pretty interesting to begin with, with a lengthy jazz music diatribe by Frank, and completely gratutious insertations of the Royal March from Aida and the Light Cavalry Overture. Frank's first solo is pretty damn decent, too, fulfilling the promise made by the frustratingly-brief snippet on the previously-circulating recording - a great Mystery Song #3 portion, and I get the feeling there are some musical quotations I'm missing. Zappa "introduces" us to the AAAFNRAA medley with the AAAFNRAA declaration - a great way to segue into the madness. Tommy also plays the Perry Mason Theme during a portion cut out on the original source.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">* - Thanks to the improved sound quality of the Kirk master/1st gen, we can now make out the secret word madness in the last half of the show. Ladies and gentlemen, tonight's secret word is definitely "Lassie".
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">* - VERY INTERESTING REVELATION #3: Finally, tonight's Enema Bandit is a MONSTER by 1980s standards, clocking in at well over 15 minutes, and featuring both a quite lengthy guitar solo and some great "jazz noise" insanity in the final vocal refrain.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Even given the still-less-than-pristine sound quality, this is ESSENTIAL listening for fans of Frank. A show truly like no other.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The track list on the album is quite wrong; the above should be correct. Track 7 is NOT "Father O'Blivion" but "Farther Oblivion", an officially unreleased number including themes from "Cucamonga" and "The Adventures of Greggary Peccary" as well as the entire "Be-Bop Tango" theme. The Mudshark and Live in Melbourne CDs have another sequencing: they flip the vinyl sides around (and get the track order 6-7-1-2-3-4-5), and the cover track list on Live in Melbourne is half wrong. The Mudshark and Tiny Nightmares covers have five superimposed pictures of Zappa playing guitar (the same picture has also been used on the Shogun Records boots Brest and Thigh); Live in Melbourne has Zappa in funny glasses, making a face.

Disc 2: Safe Muffinz

The Phoenix Records version has a deluxe colour cover. There are altogether 3 or 4 variant covers. A version in a plain white cover with plain white labels has also been reported, as well as white labels with printed side numbers and recording info written in pen. One informant described one cover version as a "black and white cover, with blank labels on the record. The cover consists of Frank's face on the front in sketch style and Frank holding a torn umbrella in front of a bulldozer, it looks a little rough in the printing side of things."

* DO NOT see also: There is also a UK promo CD called No Commercial Potential, from Ryko, 1995, and it seems that there is a vinyl counterfeit of that CD, too.
10. The Factory: Lightning-Rod Man [02:51] [Lightning-Rod Man version]

(Note: the printed track list doesn't exactly look like the above; the above is corrected and more detailed.) Tracks 5 and 6 are the 1969 single versions (a different edit of track 5 has been released on Stage #5), and tracks 9 & 5 include interview segments of some sort. Track 10 is a 1966 recording of Lowell George & the Factory, produced by and featuring Frank Zappa, officially released on the album Lightning-Rod Man in 1993.

In his book The Negative Dialectics of Poodle Play, Ben Watson calls Poot-Face Booogie "an illegal issue of such antiquity (1974) that its cover consisted of inserts in the shrink wrap. It was bought under the impression that it was official." There were issues with black & white paper inserts as well as others in colour covers with various colour inserts and stuff. One such back cover had a reprint of an interview where Zappa talked about how he was framed with making a pornographic audio tape - conspiracy to commit pornography - in the early 1960s. From The Real Frank Zappa Book, page 57:

By then my Dad had been able to hire a lawyer, who said my only hope was to plead nolo contendere (no contest - or "I'm so broke I can't even buy justice in Cucamonga, so I'll just give a thousand bucks to this lawyer here and keep my fucking mouth shut, hoping you don't give me the death penalty").

From Biffy the Elephant Shrew:

I recall an interview (reprinted on the back of the Poot Face Booogie bootleg) in which whoever transcribed the interview evidently didn't understand the Latin term and just left it out, so they had Zappa saying, "I pleaded, which means ..."

The/a back cover also had a picture of Mona Lisa with a Zappa moustache.

This recording has for a long time been thought to come from the El Monte Legion Stadium, July 1971, but it doesn't - Zappa does say "welcome to the El Monte Legion Stadium", but it's clearly the 1970 band on the record, and the recording has been identified as Santa Monica 21-Aug-1970.

The 50 original copies were issued with black & white inserts-in-the-shrink-wrap instead of covers - re-issues have colour cardboard covers (first orange, then green) and colour inserts (an orange cover copy with red & white insert has been reported). The front cover is based on the Cal Shenkel poster for the 1971 Pauley
Pavilion concert, and (misleadlingly) says "El Monte Legion Stadium 1971". Originally released in 1974.
This bootleg is archived in the United States Library of Congress! It's true: search for it in their on-line catalogue, they have it! :D (I don't know if there's such a thing as an item being removed from the Library of Congress, but as of April 2000, it was there. Control number 5672537.)
The songs were released later, on Tinsel-Town Rebellion and You Are What You Is, but in different mixes. The cover was used for Tinsel-Town Rebellion; the old title is still vaguely visible.

From Jon Naurin:

From what I've heard, someone at the radio station where Crush All Boxes was broadcast got his hands on the test pressing, and leaked it to the bootleg circuits.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is a recording of a radio show on KWST radio, 1-Nov-1975, where Zappa and Beefheart played oldies and oddities. (There is a completely unsubstantiated rumour that this radio show was actually a broadcast of a Warner Brothers promo record with these songs on it, which has never been found, and never been confirmed to have existed.)
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tracks 1, 3, 5, 10-12, 15, 19 & 20 have been officially released on Bongo Fury, The Lost Episodes, Mystery Disc and Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica. As for the other tracks:
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> * Track 2 was performed live in the studio; the Captain sings the song to a simple guitar backing
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> * Track 4 is a very strange track, announced as a recording of a group called "The Smegmates"
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> * Tracks 6-8 are CBS demos from 1965 - track 6 has been officially released (approximately) on the Mystery Disc. Track 8 may or may not include "Ned Has a Brainstorm".
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> * Track 9 recorded at Studio Z, Cucamonga, 1964
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> * Track 13 is from 1964 (very informative, isn't it?)
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> * Track 14 has been officially released (perhaps in a shorter edit) on the Mystery Disc (as "Original Mothers at the Broadside (Pomona)"); it is the first live recording of the Mothers, from 1965
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> * Tracks 16-17 are from the first Mothers rehearsal in 1965; a small fragment of track 16 has been officially released on the Mystery Disc, as "Original Mothers Rehearsal"
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> * Track 18 is a 1968 rehearsal
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> * Track 21 is NOT directly from Bongo Fury, but a longer version from an acetate, clocking in at 07:55 instead of 04:31. What has been cut out on Bongo Fury is 39 seconds just before the guitar solo (a slide solo by Denny Walley), 2 minutes and 43 seconds just after the guitar solo (effectively a piano solo and one verse), and 2 seconds of the fade-out. It's a CD bonus track from another radio broadcast, on WPLR, New Haven, 18-Apr-1975, and it also appears on Chronicle and Bongo Fury El Paso TX.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Adding to this very impressive cast of characters, the album retains some radio-station chatter from Zappa and the Captain. From Patrick Neve:
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> I think the Mystery Disc tracks sound A LOT better [here] than ... on the Mystery Disc.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The cover/"booklet" is a single sheet folded once; no staples. The front of it is a black & white image of a 1950s American suburban family of 12 gatherered around a TV set; the title is printed in colour. The back of it has a black & white photograph of Zappa and Captain Beefheart sitting at a table - the Captain is brushing his moustache and product-placing a Coca-Cola can on the table; Zappa is watching him, cigarette in hand, bemused (or slightly drunk). Back cover has a colour photograph of Zappa on stage playing his guitar. The inside picture is a black & white photo of Zappa on stage, with his guitar, but with one hand held high over his head; Captain Beefheart sits in a chair on stage, surrounded by some Mothers.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">HK elaborates on the various editions of this title:
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> "An Evening with ... FZ and Beefheart (CD)" only exists as CD-R if made by "HEAD"Label. The only existing silver version is made by "Chameleon." The HEAD-record is made on a gold-writable with only one word on it (direct printed on CD): "EVENING"Jorodolfohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08157839116082007194noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5650632705031008208.post-68100530209221810822017-06-09T19:00:00.000-03:002017-06-09T19:00:32.367-03:00Frank Zappa - (1969.05.23) - Lawrence University Chapel, Appleton, WI

The Mothers of Invention Appleton Album issue was a 200-copy edition, with "gimmick covers" housing the first 80. At least some runs had hand-sprayed titles on the cover. Some covers had a 1972-era picture of Zappa wearing a "buffoon hat" and the text "Volume one includes the first public performance of My Guitar and Uncle Meat [both had actually been played eariler] more four previously unreleased tracks. Limited first edition of 200 copies (first 80 have a special gimmix cover). Volume two is coming soon. [sic]".
and more. From Jed A Harris:

You might be interested to know that Frank often referred to this concert. I saw him in Beloit and in Greenbay and both times the first thing he said was "Is there anybody here from Appleton?". At the Beloit concert (Flo & Eddie period) he went on to say that he didn't know why it was, but the two concerts he did in Appleton were two of the best performances that the band ever gave.

4. Sleeping in a Jar
5. Uncle Meat
6. Lohengrin [Wagner]
7. Let's Make the Water Turn Black
8. Watermelon in Easter Hay (Octandre)

Tracks 1-7 are live in Bremen 1968, and track 8 is a 1980s live bonus track. "Lohengrin" here is of course less than the whole opera. The Bremen show was televised in Germany, and the name of the program was Lieder Liches. Here is what it contained:

* Jam/soundcheck
* Interview, 19-Jun-1970
* King Kong (last part)
* A Pound for a Brown (on the Bus)
* Sleeping in a Jar
* Afternoon of a Sexually Aroused Gas Mask
* Uncle Meat
* Lohengrin
* Lets Make the Water Turn Black

It was 45 minutes long, and the Bremen part of the LP is 35 minutes, missing the jam/soundcheck and interview. With the bonus track, "Watermelon in Easter Hay", the LP is probably around 40 minutes.
Patrick Neve on Apocrypha & The Lost Episodes
OK, this is going from memory. The duplicated tracks are from the same sources, but in some cases there are significant differences. "Lost in a Whirlpool" is either up or down about a half step, I think the Lost Episodes version may have sped it up for clarity. On Apocrypha, "Do It in C" is "The Blackouts" plus "Ronnie Sings". I believe the Lost Episodes version, too, is sped up. "Fountain of Love" is an ever-so-slightly longer fadeout on Apocrypha, but the sound is so fantastically better on Lost Episodes it's not even funny. Same with "Inca Roads". The real gem is the Apocrypha version of "RDNZL", which although muddy by comparison does include a very sweet little FZ guitar solo which was inexplicably stripped from The Lost Episodes.

Musicians: Various

This is a very popular bootleg box with luxurious packaging: a book-style box with a leather appearance (although not at all made of leather). The front has a photo of Zappa's moustache, and says "APOCRYPHA", "FZ" and "Thirty Years Of Frank Zappa". The back cover shows Zappa walking down the street with his UHER portable tape recorder, wearing a bulbous derby (from the same session as the inside photo in the Strictly Commercial package). A paper insert is glued under the disc trays to discs 3 and 4, which extends out to boast the track listing. The package contains a large (40-page) colour booklet with dozens of pictures and a very long and confusing 1988 interview. Liner notes appear on the far right on every right-hand page - in the style of the Stage series, "complete with misinformation" (the band line-up details are especially abominable: they are not complete, and they falsely state that the Bob Harris from 1971 and the Bob Harris from 1980 were the same person). The front of the booklet has a mid-'70s Zappa picking his nose with his middle finger; the back has an old Zappa pulling down one of his eyelids, looking rather sickly. Some copies have had errata & corrigenda inserts.

The discs are an attractive black, and bear 1) the moustache photo from the front cover, 2) the legend "Apocrypha" as it appears on the front cover, 3) the disc number in silver with the beige letters FZ slapped on top, and 4) the legend "The Live Experience" which appears around the rim of all Great Dane releases.
Disc 1

1. Lost in a Whirlpool (02:45) [The Lost Episodes version]
2. Do it in C (01:45) ["The Black-Outs" plus "Ronnie Sings?" - The Lost Episodes versions]
4. Fountain of Love (02:18) [Collins/Zappa] [The Lost Episodes version]
5. Deseri (01:51) [Collins/Buff]
6. The Story of Electricity (02:22) [Power Trio from Saints & Sinners / Bossa Nova Pervertamento] [Mystery Disc version]
7. Metal Man Has Won His Wings (02:59) [Mystery Disc version]
8. I Was a Teenage Maltshop / Status Back Baby / Ned the Mumbler / Ned Has a Brainstorm (06:25)
9. Whiskey Gone Behind the Sun (01:19) ["Louisiana Blues" by McKinley "Muddy Waters" Morganfield] [Mystery Disc version]
10. [Party Scene from] MONDO HOLLYWOOD (01:54) [Mystery Disc version]
11. Sandwich Song (01:43)
12. How Could I Be Such a Fool? (01:58) [longer edit of the Mystery Disc version]
13. Agency Man (05:43) [Mystery Disc version]
14. Randomonium (01:30)
15. My Head (00:45) [mislisted as outtake dialogue from Lumpy Gravy]
16. In Memoriam: Hieronymus Bosch (05:02)
17. In the Sky (02:00) ["Oh, in the Sky"]
18. Remington Electric Razor (00:57)
19. Directly from My Heart to You (05:46) [Penniman]
20. Twinkle Tits (10:09)

A lot of these tracks (1-4, 6-7, 10, 12-13 and 15) have been officially released on The Lost Episodes, Stage #5 and Mystery Disc. The sound quality is always a lot better on the official releases, but here are some other differences:

* Tracks 1-2 are slightly slower/lower here - about one half step down.
* Track 4 has a slightly longer fade-out here, "but the sound is so fantastically better on The Lost Episodes that it's not even funny".
* Track 12 is a different, shorter edit on Mystery Disc:

BIFFY: I always miss hearing the part from the radio broadcast where Zappa pops in to say "Missed the beat that time, didn't he?"
SPLAT: Well, there will always be Apocrypha. :) About the first 15 times I heard that, it really annoyed me; like, "C'mon Frank, could you please not cut up this nice tune, just once?" It's funny, though. It'll be good to have both versions.

As for the other tracks:

* Track 5 is a real oldie from 1962 (officially released on the Grandmothers' album Looking Up Granny's Dress)
* Tracks 8-12 taken from I Was a Teenage Maltshop and Confidential
* Parts of track 8 released on the Mystery Disc (called "I Was a Teenage Maltshop" and "The Birth of Captain Beefheart")
* Track 9 has been officially released (in a shorter edit) on the Mystery Disc (as "Original Mothers at the Broadside (Pomona)"); the song they're playing is "Louisiana Blues" by McKinley Morganfield, known as Muddy Waters
* A small fragment of track 11 has been officially released on the Mystery Disc, as "Original Mothers Rehearsal"
* Track 14 is an alternate take of "Dwarf Nebula" from Weasels Ripped My Flesh, recorded at Apostolic Studios, New York
* Track 16 is a live improvisation from a New York TV show called The Bitter End in 1967 (Hieronymus Bosch was a 15th/16th-century painter from the Netherlands, who painted monstrous images)
* Track 17, a Ruben-esque tune sung by Roy Estrada, is a BBC TV recording from 1968
* Track 18 appears to be a Remington electric razor commerical, and is featured on the Remington Electric Razor bootleg
* Tracks 19-20 are live at the Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, 07-Mar-1970, taken from the bootleg Frank Zappa & Hot Rats at the Olympic

Disc 2

1. Magic Fingers (02:47)
2. Studebaker Hoch (05:58) [excerpt from "Billy the Mountain"]
3. Interview (02:59) ["What's the Name of Your Group?"]
4. RDNZL (04:18) [longer edit of the Lost Episodes version]
5. Inca Roads (03:46) [Lost Episodes version]
6. T'Mershi Duween (02:20)
7. Stink-Foot (03:59)
8. Down in de Dew (02:54) [Läther version]
9. The Purple Lagoon / Approximate (03:59)
10. Saint Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast / Rollo (04:03)
11. Black Napkins (04:34)
12. [A Solo from] Heidelberg (03:52)
13. The Squirm (06:03) [to be released on Trance-Fusion in the future, as "Bowling on Charen"]
14. Dong Work for Yuda (02:57)
15. Moe's Vacation / The Black Page #2 (07:07)

On the paper insert, "Down in the Dew" is listed as "Duck Duck Goose", but in the liner notes, "Down in the Dew" and "Duck Duck Goose" are BOTH listed, pushing the track numbers ahead a number. Only "Down in the Dew" appears, however. Track 8 has been officially released on Läther. As for the other tracks:

* Track 1 is from 1970, maybe from Butte, Montana - it can also be found on Beyond the Fringe of Audience Comprehension.
* Track 2 is a 1971 excerpt from "Billy the Mountain", the same as on Randomonium and Cuccurrullo Brullo Brillo). It's a live recording, but there has been speculation that there are some overdubs on it.
* Track 3 is taken from the Remington Electric Razor bootleg; it's an out-take from 200 Motels, really called "What's the Name of Your Group?". It includes the intro to "German Lunch" on Stage #5, which followed immediately after it on the original bootleg, Remington Electric Razor.
* Tracks 4 and 5 have been officially released on The Lost Episodes, but in shorter edits: "RDNZL" is 04:11 here (22 seconds longer than on The Lost Episodes), and the fade-out in "Inca Roads" is a couple of seconds longer, too, "but the sound is so fantastically better on The Lost Episodes that it's not even funny". "RDNZL", though, includes a bit of guitar soloing by Zappa here, which may be interesting to hear.
* Track 6 live at the War Memorial Gym, Vancouver, 01-Oct-1975.
* Track 7 is a KCET-TV recording from 6/7-Aug-1974 (broadcast in December), which first appeared on the bootleg A Token of His Extreme (better sound here).
* Tracks 9-10 from the Saturday Night Live TV show: track 9 from 11-Dec-1976 (with comedian John Belushi) and track 10 from 21-Oct-1978.
* Track 11 is a version with the Mike Douglas band (from a 1976 TV show) backing Frank Zappa.
* Track 12 has been officially released on The Guitar World According to Frank Zappa, as "A Solo from Heidelberg" (Eppelheim 24-Feb-1978); it's from the song "Yo' Mama".
* Track 13 taken from the Zurkon Music bootleg (Halloween 1977, The Palladium, New York): it will be officially released on the guitar-solo album Trance-Fusion some time in the future, as "Bowling on Charen"
* Tracks 14 and 15 taken from the Remington Electric Razor bootleg. Track 14 (source unknown, February 1977) is surrounded by additional dialogue on Remington Electric Razor, which has been edited out here. The first 4:08 of track 15 is "Moe's Vacation" (an early version of "Moe & Herb's Vacation" in a basic arrangement), the rest is "The Black Page #2". It is from Poughkeepsie 21-Sep-1978.

Disc 3

1. Suicide Chump (09:14)
2. Nite Owl (02:14) [Tony Allen]
3. Heavy Duty Judy (04:41) [with vocals]
4. Pick Me, I'm Clean (03:31)
5. Teenage Wind (03:06)
6. Harder Than Your Husband (02:33)
7. Bamboozled by Love (03:06)
8. Falling in Love is a Stupid Habit (01:46)
9. This is My Story (01:21) [Forrest/Levy]
10. Whipping Post (06:27) [Allman]
11. Clownz on Velvet (05:54)
12. Frogs with Dirty Little Lips (02:08) [Frank/Ahmet Zappa]
13. In France (03:55)
14. Broken Hearts are for Assholes (05:54)
15. Texas Medley (09:05) [Lennon/McCartney/Zappa]: Norweigian Jim ["Norweigian Wood"] / Louisiana Hooker with Herpes ["Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"] / Texas Motel ["Strawberry Fields Forever"]
16. I Am the Walrus (03:43) [Lennon/McCartney]
17. America the Beautiful (03:16) [traditional]

* Track 1 is live at Stonybrook, New York, 15-Oct-1978.
* Track 2 is taken from the bootleg Remington Electric Razor. It's from the late show in Santa Monica on 11-Dec-1980 - a soundboard recording.
* Track 3 is a soundboard recording from the second show in Pittsburgh 13-Nov-1980 (from Good Grief!). It has "vocals", in the sense that Ike and Ray sing "Heavy Duty Judy" in the very beginning over the riff.
* Tracks 4-8 are taken from the Crush All Boxes version in the Mystery Box.
* Tracks 9-11 are from The Ritz in New York, 17-Nov-1981, as on the bootleg Assault on New York - The Toxic Shock Trilogy (Part III: Clownz on Velvet). Al DiMeola guests on track 11. "This Is My Story" was originally recorded by Gene & Eunice, with Johnny's Combo (Johnny was Johnny Otis, inspiration for Zappa's moustache) on the Alladin label (3282), 17-Feb-1955, and peaked at #8 on the R&B chart 21-May-1955.
* Track 12 is a 1981 studio version (taken from the Demos bootleg).
* Track 13 is from Hollywood 22-Jul-1984, with George Duke and Jonny "Guitar" Watson guesting. It's the same performance as on the bootleg All You Need is Glove, but from a different source tape. Whereas the All You Need is Glove version is a soundboard A+, this sounds miserable, and also has a minute or so of "banter" before the song starts.
* Track 14 is live in Santa Monica, 11-Dec-1981 (early show). Someone throws food on stage; Zappa stops the song and makes him eat it.
* Tracks 15-16 are live in Springfield 13-Mar-1988, with the medley lyrics changed to ridicule the disgraced TV evangelist Jimmy Swaggart.
* Track 17 is live in Burlington 12-Mar-1988.

Disc 4

1. The World's Greatest Sinner (11:58)
2. Sink Trap [listed as "Gypsy Airs"] (01:51)
3. Some Ballet Music (06:33)
4. The Jelly (02:13) [last part of the CD version of "Didja Get Any Onya?" from Weasels Ripped My Flesh, plus a couple of extra seconds]
5. Revenge of the Knick-Knack People (06:25) [extended version]
6. Spontaneous Minimalist Composition (02:01)
7. Sinister Footwear (26:08)
8. The Black Page #1 (02:05)
9. While You Were Art #1 (07:19)

* Track 1 is an excerpt from the film THE WORLD'S GREATEST SINNER that Zappa scored in 1961. The film music was played by the Pomona Valley Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Fred E. Graff, and the parts of Satan (the narrator) and Clarence "God" Hilliard were played by Paul Frees and Timothy A. Carey, respectively. It's taken from the Serious Music bootleg.
* Track 2 is taken from the Zut Alors bootleg. The piece was originally recorded in 1967 for an unreleased single, which was planned for release on Capitol Records together with the all-orchestral original version of Lumpy Gravy, which was only released on 8-track. However, this recording is probably from the 1975 concert at the UCLA Royce Hall (the same concert as on Orchestral Favorites) instead.
* Track 3 taken from the bootleg The Ark (Boston, 08-Jul-1969).
* Track 4 is the last part of the CD version of "Didja Get Any Onya?" from Weasels Ripped My Flesh - a spring 1969 recording, exact date and location unknown. It appears on We Are the Mothers & This Is What We Sound Like!, which is both an unreleased album and a bootleg). It has a few seconds at the end that are not on the Weasels CD.
* Track 5 has been officially released (in a shorter edit) on Läther, as a bonus track. This longer version is taken from the Serious Music bootleg.
* Tracks 6 and 7 were recorded at the "A Zappa Affair" concert at the Zellerbach Auditorium at UC Berkeley, 16-Jun-1984, played by the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kent Nagano. This is the only time "Sinister Footwear" has been performed in its entirety, and Zappa was most unhappy with the results. The ballet consisted of giant puppets with dancers inside them. It's taken from the bootleg Serious Music, and the Serious Music entry has a list of the titles of the 21 parts of the piece.
* Track 8 is a 1986 synclavier version taken from something like an 8" flexi disc issued with Keyboard Magazine.
* Track 9 is a 1985 synclavier version which has somehow found its way here.

Note that although much of Apocrypha has been officially released on The Lost Episodes and the Mystery Disc, the versions on Apocrypha are often slightly longer.

Special note for track 12:

On track 12. "Wild Love (Part 1)" is a heavy jump at about 01:03. This glitch is
in the recording not on the vinyl. Until then you can hear some ugly volume changings
mainly on the left channel. So it could be possible that the taper had adjusted his
equipment until that point, stopped the tape and then continued the recording.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is one of the best 1984 shows, in its entirety, with very good sound. (Some copies have been reported to list disc one as disc two, and vice versa.) Track 20 is about "voodo mar-juh-rene underpants" and track 24 about "the Women's Movement" - in a discussion on alt.fan.frank-zappa in March 2000 about "the dumbest or most embarassing thing Zappa said on stage", this talk on "the Women's Movement" was one of two things that came up. JWB describes it like this:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Before the encore, somebody passes a note onstage. It has a bunch of fan-esque compliments and then it says something like "the only thing about you that sucks is your attitude towards women" ... and then it says something about the Raggedy Ann doll and how he should make it do some things to men who are just as dumb as the women he makes fun of, rather than sexual things.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Then Zappa replies out of the blue, in a condescending voice, with something like, "Let me tell you about women's movements. The only good women's movement is the one where I'm inside of them and they're holding onto the bedpost and their eyes are rolled up in the back of their head. What do you think about that?"

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(The other thing that came up was the "Lock Jaw Rap" from Good Grief!/Lisa's Dangerous Kitchen (London 19-Jun-1982, early show).)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bits of this show also appear on Big Mother Is Watching You and Z: All You Need Is Glove.Jorodolfohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08157839116082007194noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5650632705031008208.post-82943259979442212232017-06-03T19:49:00.001-03:002017-06-03T19:49:17.488-03:00Frank Zappa - 1974.10.01 - Swiss Cheese At The Festhalle Basel (Festhalle Mustermesse, Basel, Switzerland)

Watermelon in Easter Hay

According to the cover, side 1 is from the Palladium, and sides 2-6 are from the Ritz. (When Guitar Player Magazine conducted a poll in the early 1990s, the Ritz concert was voted "BEST CONCERT BY ANYONE, ANYWHERE, EVER".) A more comprehensive Ritz concert issue was Zappa in New York 81.

* Tracks 2-4 have been officially released on the DUB ROOM SPECIAL video, with track 3 slightly edited. Between tracks 1-2 on this album you can hear the beginning and end of the second movement of "Sinister Footwear", which was played but edited out, and after track 4 you can hear the start of "Doreen".
* The entire first guitar solo in "Drowning Witch" on Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch is taken from this recording, but this is a different, edited version.
* Tracks 11 and 12 are not listed on the album cover, which instead lists track 10 as being split over the side break, but the listing above is correct.
* Track 20 was originally recorded by Gene & Eunice, with Johnny's Combo (Johnny was Johnny Otis, inspiration for Zappa's moustache) on the Alladin label (3282) on 17-Feb-1955, and peaked at #8 on the R&B chart on 21-May-1955.
* Tracks 20-21 also appear on Apocrypha.
* Track 16 is a short solo by Tommy Mars, while Zappa tunes his guitar.
* Special guest Al DiMeola plays a solo on "Clownz on Velvet". (Zappa didn't play with him, because they couldn't hook up enough guitars.) Some people refuse to believe that it's the real Al DiMeola, but it is.

Drowning Witch (Toxic Shock Part I) has a yellow xerox paper glued to a white cardboard cover. It is simply a pretty ugly drawing of Zappa, backed by the letters ZAPPA, plus title, track list, venues and dates. The record labels say "Magpie Records & Ozz-Good Productions present: THE RAMBLERS".

Many of the boxes included a bonus 7" single containing:

Side 1. Envelopes [17-Nov-1981]
Side 2. Black Napkins [31-Oct-1981]

Also, the 3 LPs have been issued in one single sleeve with a xerox insert. The insert has pictures of the three album covers and an overview of the set (written by a non-bootlegger).

<span style="color: #e69138; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Track 1 is a spoken intro over a repeat of the first part of "The Purple Lagoon", which segues into "Dancin' Fool". This "The Torture Never Stops" solo is the original recording that was edited down to "Rat Tomago" on the Sheik Yerbouti album! "King Kong" goes into a very loose improvisation and fades out after 8 or 9 minutes.
<span style="color: orange; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Track 9 is the intro to "I Have Been in You", along the lines of "Is This Guy Kidding or What?" on Stage #6. <span style="color: orange; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">On the disc is the "young Frank" picture from the Ruben & the Jets album. The same picture is under the tray. The cover shows an extremely sleazy Zappa with a Barbie doll and a cigarette; the back of the booklet has Zappa in a robe, witch hat and lady's glasses holding a basket of fruit and dentures (the same picture was used on the back cover of The Untouchables).
<span style="color: orange; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cover track list is wrong; the above is more correct. "Track" 7 is the orchestrated intro from "Little House I Used to Live In" followed by a solo section (as on Project-Object) - track 8 is the full-length recording of "The Sheik Yerbouti Tango" on Sheik Yerbouti, which was part of the "Little House I Used to Live In" solos! It occupies 38:07-44:05; the official edit covers 39:47-43:40, so both beginning and end are unreleased. Track 9 is the "Little House I Used to Live In" intro coming back as a closer. <span style="color: orange; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The cover depicts Zappa by the Hendrix Strat, as on page 97 of Dominique Chevalier's book Viva! Zappa. This time, there is no picture on the disc, but the "young Frank" picture from Ruben & the Jets is still under the tray. <span style="color: orange; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Informations by Lukpac (http://lukpac.org/~handm<span style="color: orange; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">ade/patio/index.html).
